Tetris as Art: From Pixels to Ceramics
The game Tetris is an undisputed icon of its era. It is loved worldwide, regardless of age or profession. Its creator is a Soviet programmer, whose invention captivated millions of minds. Tetris became the prototype for many modern computer games.
As artists, we couldn't ignore this phenomenon: after all, Tetris is partly an architectural story. The player constructs a whole from predetermined geometric shapes—"falling" elements. This has its own philosophy and harmony: only by creating a continuous line without gaps can one progress and earn points.
We wanted to look at Tetris as a sign of the times, as a piece of everyday history and a favorite pastime—and transform it into a work of art. This work is about memory, history, and nostalgia. It is meant to enter our lives and interiors as naturally as the game itself once did, but in a new guise. This is the journey of ceramics: from the late 1980s to the 21st century.
The form of our work echoes one of the recognizable geometric shapes from Tetris. Other elements of the game are carved and applied to its surface. At the same time, the object functions as a stand—a kind of "monument" to the iconic game, combining symbolism and practical application.
The form of the work alludes to high-rise buildings, in every window of which a Tetris game once flashed. These "windows" are the Tetris tiles themselves; they can be softly illuminated by a hidden LED strip. The surface of the stand is dark and aged, imitating noble rusted metal, devoid of its perfect shine—for Tetris is now history. Our vision is to evoke warm nostalgia, evoke smiles and memories, renew the theme of adult games, and showcase new horizons in ceramic art.
